Research Themes

SITE4Society@UNU-MERIT is part of the Research Group ”Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainability Transitions” of the United Nations University-MERIT.

In this group, researchers study the role of science, technology, innovation and engagement (SITE) to address societal challenges. The aim is to develop insights, indicators, tools, educational programmes and services relevant for businesses, governments, social sector actors, researchers and citizens. The research is often done within a multi-disciplinary approach with attention to the problem definitions, capabilities and interests of different stakeholders and relevant institutions. Sustainability education, societal outreach, case study analysis, indicator work and direct interactions with policy makers  are core activities.

1. Eco-Innovation

This research theme focuses on Eco-innovation, in particular eco-innovative (scientific, technological, social, organisational) solutions, eco-innovation policy and governance.

2. Circular Economy

This research theme focuses on Circular Economy, in particular circular economy related solutions (scientific, technological, social, organisational), circular economy policy and governance.

3. Energy and Mobility Transitions

This research theme focuses on Energy and Mobility Transitions, in particular emerging solutions (scientific, technological, social, organisational), emerging (science, technology and innovation) policy and governance.

4. WASH Transitions (waste management, sanitation and hygiene behaviour)

This research theme focuses on WASH Transitions, in particular waste management, sanitation and hygiene behaviour, entrepreneurship-related policies and governance.

This research theme focuses on Innovation for Inclusive and Sustainable Development, in particular related entrepreneurial activities, policies and governance.
